Lines And Wrinkles

Lines and wrinkles are sadly a natural side-effect of growing older and whilst no-one minds the odd laughter line around the eye when these are joined by creases, folds and deep ridges on the face then they are often unwelcome additions.

The factors that affect when and how the skin ages are sun-damage, environmental factors, genetics, smoking, alcohol and dehydration.

Sun damage has the most dramatic effect on how the skin ages with the face, neck and hands being almost permanently exposed to UV rays all the year round. Unless a good SPF factor is used sun damage will occur. Smoking also drastically affects the way the skin ages and tobacco smoke contains over 4000 chemicals some of which are known to damage collagen and elastin. It also affects the blood vessels which deliver essential oxygen supplies and nutrients to the skin, two essential ingredients which keep the skin looking firm and plump. Excessive alcohol consumption causes dehydration which in turn can leave the skin thinner and drier.

All of these factors can lead to a depletion in the bodies own natural collagen and elastin causing the skin to get drier, thinner and more liable to free radical damage. The result of all of this is the presentation of lines and wrinkles in the forehead, crows’ feet, and neck as well as loss of volume in the cheek and lip areas. As we continue to age and without interception the lines and wrinkles may become deep furrows and folds and lips and cheeks lose volume altogether.
