Don't Sweat... We Have It Covered!

21 June 2018

Believe it or not deodorants and antiperspirants work in very different ways.

Deodorants work by reducing bacterial levels on the skin - the odour that comes from sweating in some areas is a result of a mix of sweat, sebaceous material and bacteria. Anti-perspirants on the other hand contain aluminium salts that mix with the sweat, turning into a gel film that helps reduce the movement of sweat out of the pore.

If it is odour you are concerned about then deodorants are more appropriate. If on the other hand it is sweat stains or frank damp patches then you need antiperspirant.

Manufacturers are very aware of the high incidence of sensitive skin so most have products specifically formulated for these people. Irritation though is a common problem and the only real way to find out is trial and error.

Whether deodorant or anti-perspirant they are best applied to clean, dry, cool skin. In the case of anti-perspirants applying the night before will help to ‘get ahead’ of the problem for the following morning. Having said that some people with severe sweating issues are sweating from the minute they step out of the shower. In which case switch to a cool shower, towel dry and apply antiperspirant straight away.

With shaving or hair removal procedures such as waxing or lasering best to avoid immediate application of products as this can allow the ingredients to penetrate deeper causing significant irritation. This in turn can trigger an ongoing repeat sensitivity whenever that product is applied next time.

Whether you use sprays or sticks, it is down to personal choice and being comfortable with the feel on the skin. Absolutely never share sticks or roller products as you just run the risk of picking up someone else’s bacterial skin flora.

There is no evidence that aluminium in anti-perspirants causes any health issues.

Excessive sweating is a very common condition and it can affect your whole body. Sweating in the armpit area or on your hands can be extremely embarrassing and very restrictive to your everyday life.

Our Hyperhydrosis treatment is extremely popular and a truly life changing procedure.

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, is a common disorder which can adversely affect your quality of life. Excessive sweating of the underarms is the most common. Heat and emotions may trigger hyperhidrosis in some, but many frequently suffer from this condition regardless of their mood or the weather. Excessive sweating is embarrassing and often complicates business and social interactions.
